Whakatane Town Centre regeneration, New Zealand

This project won the Town Centres Association (NZ) Award for the best town centre physical improvements in 2002. Nick Robinson Landscape Architect was consultant landscape architect to Whakatane District Council responsible for landscape concept, detailed design, and site supervision. Distinctive design concepts and idioms were developed, reflecting the stories and legends associated with Whakatane. It includes the creation of two new civic spaces, both from car parks, streetscape design and the Otuawhaki Visitor’s Centre and waterfront plaza. This development was opened by the Prime Minister at the time, Helen Clark.
